A permanent concern of the researchers regarding the environment protection and the improvement of life quality in order to sustain the society development is orientated to viable solution for reducing the global warming. The main contributor to this negative phenomenon is represented by the carbon dioxide (CO2). This gas results in various processes, such as fossil fuels combustion or as a by-product from bio-hydrogen production. Also, the carbon dioxide is one of the main contaminants of natural gas and usually it is found in high concentration in its composition. The conventional methods for the gases purification involve high operation and maintenance costs, many of them having a negative impact on the environment. For this reason, finding methods for the carbon dioxide removal by using membranes represents a good alternative of the conventional methods, being both an economic and ecologic solution. This study comes as a response to the environment protection issues, covering the most important aspects regarding the carbon dioxide removal with different membranes, highlighting their advantages and drawbacks. In terms of operating conditions, the inorganic membranes are suitable for applications that involve high temperature. Also, the polymeric and mixed matrix membranes bring some advantages in gas separation processes, such as easy processability and low manufacturing costs.
