This work presents the results of the study of the different content (0-7 wt.% in increment of 1 wt%) effect of bentonite microparticles on the mechanical and barrier properties of gelatin/potato starch/glycerol (90/10/30 wt.%) edible biocomposite films. The biocomposite films are prepared by casting method from film-forming water solution and characterized by thickness, moisture content, transparency, mechanical test at puncturing, water barrier properties and water solubility. Increasing the concentration of bentonite particles from 0 to 7 wt.% in the biopolymeric matrix of the films linearly enhanced the puncture strength from 0.89 to 1.24 MPa .The clay filler particles highly dispersed in a biocomposite matrix reinforces it and prevents the formation of the microcracks because interphase interaction between polymer matrix and fillers are strong. However, addition and increases content of bentonite particles do not change significantly the elasticity of the films. The addition of clay slightly increased the thickness and opacity of the biocomposite material. The moisture content was decreased from 10.5 to 7.69% up to a clay content of 7%. The degree of water solubility decreases approximately to 20%. Water vapor permeability approximately to 50% decreases with adding of the bentonite particles which may be associated with suppression of water vapor diffusion through the films.
