The interest in sustainable economic development, with all the financial benefits arising from it, is a priority to the objectives of protection in Natura 2000 sites. To highlight the antithesis between the protection objectives and the desire for economic development of this space, we used the Markov model. The data used for the analysis were the boundaries of the Natura 2000 sites and the information provided by Corine Land Cover data set from 2006 (the year prior to the establishment of these sites) and 2012. Because the analysis revealed a greater pressure on the southern coast we chose three sites that protect as many coastal lagoons. In order to determine the expansion of the built-up area (mostly created for tourist and leisure facilities) we reclassified the Corine Land Cover classes into three categories (artificial, agricultural and natural or semi-natural land), then we applied the Markov model and computed the converted and unconverted areas during this period. The results were grouped into three categories: the dynamics of land use between 2006 and 2012, the areas occupied by converted land and the ones occupied by the one unconverted.
