The atmospheric pollutants emissions derive mostly from industrial and social activities and represent a serious risk to the ecosystems and for the human health. At European level, in the recent years there has been a significant reduction in anthropogenic emissions, but certain atmospheric pollutants continue to harm the human health. The suspension particles represent a complex mixture of very small particles and liquid, with an extremely diverse composition. Along with nitrogen, the particulate matter pollutants are considered to be the pollutants with the most serious effect on human health. In this paper we have analyzed the evolution of the particulate matter concentrations in the last few years, in the Municipality of Timisoara, particulary the fraction of particulate matter PM10. The recorded values were compared with those imposed by the European Union, respectively with the limit values allowed for air quality, in particular for the fraction of particulate matter PM10. In order to decrease the pollutant emissions and to ensure a good quality of the air in the city of Timisoara a set of permanent measures are required like: the restriction of heavy traffic in the city perimeter, a proper surveillance for the construction sites and for the urban household works.
