The present paper analyses the use of resources and municipal waste generation in western Romania. In this territory the waste generation continues to grow but there are considerable differences between urban and rural area, regarding the resource use and waste generation per person, generated mainly by different social and economic conditions, and different levels of awareness towards the environmental issues. While resource extraction has been stabilized in the last decade, dependence on imports is increasing. In Timis County and also in the Development Region V West there is a constant concern for the implementation of an integrated waste management to comply with the Waste Framework Directive. Introducing the concept of the life cycle of waste within the waste management policies has expanded the approach methods towards the environmental issues. At the same time this initiative helped raising the awareness regarding the compatibility of waste management activities with other environmental approaches.
