The article contributes to mapping the state of vegetation using phytosociological surveys in the industrial landscape of Upper Silesia. The main objective of the research was the phytosociological evaluation of the Landek Hill National Natural Heritage Area and of an anthropogenic mine waste dump Urx located in the same area. Human activities have significantly influenced the species composition and the phytosociological aspects in the study areas both in a positive and negative manner due to the differences in chemical composition and temperature. Geobotanical studies serve as the basis for further management of such areas. The field surveys rendered phytosociological characteristics to assess the current state of vegetation. The results of the research in plant communities were classified to the alliance level. In the territory of Landek Hill we found the alliance-Carpinion and Fagion and in mine dump area we classified the alliance-Genisto germanicae-Quercion. The article compares the past botanical surveys in the territory of the Landek National Natural Heritage Area from 1983, 1997, 2005, and one from the Urx coal waste dump from 1997 with the present results. This contributed to the observations of succession of plant communities in the study areas and practical results to be compared with the available theoretical knowledge on phytocoenology.
