Within petroleum refining facilities are manufactured, used and stored significant amounts of hazardous materials, including raw materials, intermediates and final products. Within refineries there may arise the fire hazard for processing installations of the intermediate products with high melting point. For many of these intermediate products there are not determined the flammability parameters, fact which could allow the development and application of some efficient measures for prevention or limitation of dangerous effects of technological faults able to ignite a fire or even an explosion.
The paper aims to present a solution for this issue, presenting results obtained from laboratory methods developed for the characterization of oil intermediate products, with regard to auto-ignition temperature and the explosion limits. For carrying out the flammability tests there was needed additional equipment for the preparation of the intermediate oil products so that to use them within the proper aggregation state, liquid or gas.
