The air pollution in Polish cities causes the formation of the phenomenon of smog. The reason for this phenomenon is mainly low society awareness of environmental protection and the methods of preventing the use of low-quality fuels in the home fireplaces. At the same time the development of the automotive industry contributes to this negative phenomenon. The air pollution in large and small Polish cities was analysed. The examples of cities fighting against the smog were also given. The research of the air quality in chosen months of the heating season - winter 2016/2017 in chosen cities in the southern Polish (Silesia Region - industrial area) was presented. The results of the actual measurements in chosen months of winter season 2016/2017 were referred to the standards of the annual levels of air pollution PM10.
Proposals for changes on the municipal and provincial levels to prevent the problem of occurrence of the smog in the Silesia Region in the following years were mentioned. It was decided to limit the use of the low-quality fuels in the home fireplaces. The use of public transport as an alternative method of reducing the use of cars in this regard was also presented. It was pointed out the solutions to meet the emission standards of air pollutants as a way to fight against smog, dust and harmful gases through the exchange of old, non-organic boilers.
