The present study aims to analyze the impact of the aridization process on the demographic evolution of the territorial systems, most affected by. The aridization process is a climate phenomenon, characterized by extreme climate parameters (high temperatures and low precipitation quantities). Three main counties in the southern part of Romania have been chosen as a case study (Mehedinti, Dolj and Olt counties). This is a geographical area where the aridization process is largely spread. In this area, a demographic ageing has been also observed, due to the lack of the economic activity, especially the agricultural ones. The period the analyses have been conducted was 1990-2016, measuring the share of the population, aged 65 years old and over in the total population. The methodology we used for this research combines GIS with statistical models, some correlation and indexes. The GIS analyses underlined an alarming increase of areas affected by aridity, in the study area and revealed some negative aspects of the demographic ageing and depopulation of the territorial systems affected.
