In the context in which European authorities promote the use and development of rail transport, in Romania, this type of transport is on a continuous decline. To have a better view of the situation, it is necessary to highlight the limitations of the relief in order to reveal some of the Romanian rail system deficiencies. ?he Galati Railway Regional District was chosen as a case study because it includes railroads that run through all types of relief (plain, hill, plateau or mountain areas) and connect cities and towns with various dimensions and different roles in the regional urban system. Also, the existence of various speed limitations throughout the district affects the rail transport efficiency which can influence the overall economic development of a region.Analyzing the existing situation in railway infrastructure and determining the relief?s potential for traffic improvement are the main goals of this article. In order to achieve this, information regarding railway traffic, cartographic materials and GIS software were used.
