Villages and rural settlements are an integral part of the Czech landscape. The colonization of the Czech lands has an ancient tradition but the role that the small municipalities play in the territory is very variable. This article aim is to describe the historical development of selected small towns. Each one is representing different production area in the South Bohemian region. Besides assessing their area, functional use of individual parts of the towns and the demographic composition, there will be also assessed their role and function in the wider context of the surrounding agro-forest landscape. In the South Bohemian Region, there are three different production areas, namely potato, cereal and pasture. The conducted research shows that in each area the current situation is quite different from the historical formation. The formation of communities and their role in those parts of the region also largely depend on other factors such as political reform, historical events, population structure etc.
