The aim of this article is to demonstrate the effectiveness of employing case study analysis in English in order to educate future oil and gas engineers on environmental accountability. The case study will comprise of the activity of the company Beyond Petroleum (BP) and its response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill of 2010. The research methodology includes: analysis of literature on environmental ethics, the case study and ways of teaching it; study of the educational requirements for oil and gas engineers. Experimental teaching was employed as the second research method. The findings of the research are as follows: firstly, the environmental accountability of future oil and gas engineers is effectively developed using a case study analysis based on a real case from a current company and with the teaching organized in foreign language classes. All these components of successful teaching develop the oil and gas engineer?s professional competence, thus achieving one of the main purposes of an engineer?s education. Secondly, analyzing a case study centered around such a pressing issue activates students? speaking skills in English. Students showed more interest in speaking in English when they had to apply case study analysis techniques to a real case. The research provides proof that in developing of an oil or gas engineer?s professional competence, it is effective to bring several different components of teaching together: foreign language skills, e.g. persuasive speaking; the professional traits of the oil and gas engineer, e.g. environmental accountability; analytical skills, e.g. the case study analysis.
