Today?s economy, referred to as ?knowledge-based economy?, relies on advances in science and education of society as a basic factor of social and economic development. The article presents the implementation of two-way cross-border co-operation in the exchange of experiences in innovative applications of production engineering using mathematical methods in various kinds of activities between technical universities and other participants. This type of activity means transfer of knowledge resulting from practical applications of possibilities offered by production engineering in production, services and facilities located on both sides of the border. This activity will result in the development of new methods or modification of the existing ones by adjusting them to the conditions and needs that take into account technological, organisational and structural differences between the neighbouring countries. The article presents activities which have been undertaken by two technical universities on both sides of the border: Silesian University of Technology (Poland) and Higher Mining School in Ostrava (the Czech Republic). For this purpose the financial resources offered by the EU within the framework of structural funds have been used.
