The digital transformation of actual economy is changing business models, demanding different skills including innovation and entrepreneurship, digital competences, and learning to learn, needed for enabling competitiveness.
Within this sphere, the modernization of higher education institutions through embracing technological changes and new digital teaching and learning practices in the campus gains strategic relevance and acts as catalyzers for business and future job creation.
The scope of the study is limited to reviewing official documents, reports, initiatives and best practices at European level and to qualitatively evaluate the steps needed to be performed by the national higher education providers to embrace digital transformation into the current teaching and learning practices.
The methodology commences with analyzing the trends of demands in terms of the digital skills of young graduates at EU level, being complement by the country statistical data and key initiatives which help to equip graduates with the right occupation-specific skills such as digital skills, creative thinking, problem solving, and ability to work in an interconnected technological world.
The author proposed a conceptual model which captures the digital teaching and learning practices into the modernization strategy of higher education institutions, mainstreaming best practices and sustaining the environment required for good governance and oversight of education quality.
The results attempt to provide a structured and process oriented action for defining, implementing, evaluating and adjusting the effective use of digital learning technologies as key means for seize the opportunities of the digital revolution and for enabling the potential of knowledge-base on digital skills.
