The aim of the article is to teach future petroleum engineers how to write a report as part of their English language course. The topic of a report will be assessing the immediate response of the relevant parties to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.
The methods will involve the analysis of the undergraduate curriculum for petroleum engineers, the study of literature on methods for writing professional documents; and the experimental teaching of writing a report in English.
The findings are as follows: writing a report will be more effective if students do background research on the issue of a report; if students write on a subject related to their future specialization; if students utilize the above-mentioned techniques at the same time in order to improve their writing skills in English.
The research helped to increase the motivation of students to improve their writing skills, thus mastering their foreign language competence. Secondly, the research managed to show how a pressing issue presented as a thought stimulus can develop future petroleum engineers? professional competence. Students have become more environmentally aware of the issues related to their specialization. The research also emphasized the effectiveness of teaching skills such as report writing in a foreign language.
