1050 aluminum alloys are used in the conventional engineering applications where the increased corrosion resistance is required (e.g. automotive industries or construction, containers). Improving the corrosion resistance of 1050 aluminum alloy is an extensively studied topic. Different methods are applied to improve the corrosion resistance of 1050 aluminum alloy as: painting, waxing, zinc-chromate priming, thin layer of pure aluminum, coatings with a liquid protective solution, conversion coatings and also anodic oxidation process. The anodic oxidation of 1050 aluminum alloy is the most used method to obtain a nanoporous surface with controlled thickness and pores diameters.

The aim of this work is to study the influence of the sealing process of nanoporous aluminum oxide obtained by anodic oxidation on 1050 aluminum alloy surface.

Corrosion behavior of anodized 1050 aluminum alloy, anodized and sealed 1050 aluminum alloy and untreated 1050 aluminum alloy were investigated using electrochemical methods such as open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PD). The electrochemical results show that the sealing process decreases the pores diameters and increase the corrosion resistance of anodic aluminum oxide layer.
