The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of microcrystalline cellulose fibers on the mechanical properties of flexible starch based foams. During the experiment the foams obtained with potato starch with the addition of glycerol as plasticizer were tested. The starch was blended with glycerol in laboratory mixer with 30 wt.% glycerol addition. The process of making foams have been carried out by microwave heating in laboratory microwave oven. To improve the mechanical properties of starch foams to the mixture were added in an amount of 5, 10, 15 and 40 wt. % of the microcrystalline cellulose. Obtained with the process of heating the foam was compressed and next step the strength and elastic index was measured for each starch blends. It was also examined the foams resistance to water by measuring the weight loss during storage in water. The study showed that increased of the cellulose ratio is able to improve from 20% up to 120% the value of the modulus of elasticity starch based foams, and increases the resistance for water of from 50% to 150% for tested foams. Increasing the share of cellulose starch reduces the porosity index and water absorption index (WAI) for received foams.
