Membrane processes used in wastewater treatment are categorized as the best techniques available at this time because it has advantages in terms of quality and costs.
The membranes have different properties depending on the obtaining parameters. Their properties can be influenced throughout the membrane fabrication steps: when the polymer solution is prepared, when the polymer solution is applied in form of a thin film and also even after the thin film membrane is removed from the coagulation bath. Some important aspects in membrane fabrication are the type of polymer, the concentration, the deposited polymer layer. The polymer of choice for this study was polysulfone (PSf) due to its excellent resistance to compaction, high operating pressures and high temperature stability. The main objective was to study the influence of polymer concentration on membrane properties. Polymer solutions were applied with four different concentrations: 23, 25, 27, and 30 wt% PSf and a solution casting thickness of 100 micrometer. The samples obtained were studied at a constant pressure. Flux, permeability, porosity and the retention degree of membranes were subjected to observation. |
