In this study a dried carrot pomaces (CP) were added to improve the mechanical properties and biodegradability of the thermoplastic starch and poly(lactic-acid) (PLA) blends. Application for vegetable byproducts rich in the fibers are limited due to a lack of effective processing methods. Therefore, the raw material should be pretreated to break this bond to expose the polysaccharide components to further enzymatic and chemical reactions. Before drying carrot pomaces underwent ultrasonic pretreatment. Ultrasonication was done to improve the material biodegradability index (BI). The dried carrot pomaces were added to PLA/TPS blends in different proportions. The elasticity modulus, tensile strength and elongation to break were calculated from the stress-stain curves considering the results of at least five tests for each PLA-TPS-CP blends. The effect of CP ratio in investigated blends on BI improvement was critically examined. It was noticed that CP addition improves tensile strength and elongation to break significantly. The elasticity modulus of examined probes from PLA-TPS-CP blend was slightly higher in comparison to elements produced without CP addition.
