The marine ecosystem has been the cradle of life on Earth, and the entire evolution of human populations was related to the sea. Always present, in most great civilizations, from economy to art, the marine ecosystem always played a special and complex part in the human conscience and sole. Our article focuses on the relationship between certain factors of the marine ecosystems and both wellness and pathology of the eyes. Just like the tide of the sea goes both ways, so do the effects of the sea water and its associated factors act, both positive and negative. The salted sea and other associated factors of the marine ecosystem are well known healing agents, used in many different therapies, individually and combined, most of them being parts of the arsenal used by the balneologist physicians in their struggle for health and wellness. However, when thalassotherapy is applied outdoor, the presence of some associated elements, such as wind, sunlight, heat and sand exposure, acts together with the sea salt, generating physical burns, red eyes and eritema of the eyelids and sometimes even severe, potentially lethal diseases. This is the reason why the authors point out on the special attention required by the eyes during marine environment exposure, no matter where the subjects are located, both on the sand beach or on the sea water. Understanding the risks related to marine ecosystem concerning the human ocular health is a key for prevention and for taking, the best of what eyes benefits has this complex and precious ecosystem to offer.
