The common fig tree (Ficus carica L.), is one of the oldest cultivated Mediterranean crop, is a useful genetic resource for commercial cultivation. The aim of this study was, the analysis of genetic diversity of the species Ficus carica from western Romania. Genetic diversity of fifteen fig-tree cultivars collected from three Romanian west regions were investigated using Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) primers. Using a set of primers, the most informative ones were selected for their ability to generate ISSR polymorphic DNA bands. Five primers produced 60 fragments with a mean of 12 fragments per primer. The maximum percentage of polymorphic markers was 100.0 for oligonucleotides P-02 and the minimum was 75 for HB14.Total polymorphism generated by a certain primer (PIC), presented values between 0.335 to P02 and 0.43 to P03. The discrimination index (PI), registered values among 3.07 and 6.03 for P02 primer, which had the highest capacity to generated polymorphic bands to studied fig varieties. We conclude that is an important genetic diversity at the DNA level among the fig varieties and all genotypes studied could provide valuable material for use in breeding programs.
