Natural gas and oil have been unquestionably the most important energy resources in the world for years. Unfortunately, the occurrence of oil-based regions does not coincide with the main areas of oil and gas consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to transport hydrocarbons over very long distances. Sometimes thousands of kilometers. Laying pipelines is an extremely costly and logistically difficult engineering project. The basic methods of building gas pipelines include laying them in an open excavation. Sometimes it is a technology that is very burdensome for the natural environment and sometimes impossible to use, e.g. when crossing wide watercourses, highways, protected areas or marshes. In such cases, the latest technological solutions should be used, i.e. trenchless technologies such as: Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), Microtunneling, Direct Pipe (DP).
The article describes the technique of pipeline construction in the discussed technologies on the example of works carried out in Poland. The criteria for choosing the technology for the construction of a gas pipeline have been characterized. A comparison of the technologies described on the basis of completed investments is presented. Their advantages, limitations and disadvantages were listed.
