In the latest decades, wooden structures have known a significant revival in the context of sustainability challenges, considering the low-embedded energy, low carbon impact of this renewable resource. The employment of modern wood structures presents many economical advantages as well, from the availability and the low-cost of the material, to the ease of processing and construction. An important aspect is the energy-efficiency of the system in exploitation, when we consider life-cycle assessments. Light-frame construction using standardized elements has evolved since its first use, more than a century ago, as a well-perfected construction technique, imposing itself as the most widely used system for housing construction in many parts of the world, including North America. A new challenge for the system is to employ it for a near zero energy house using the same standardized elements. The authors present in this paper an innovative solution, in which platform framing serves as the fundamental basis for a dwelling with high energy and environmental performance. The task was to increase the width of the walls and slab, in order to insure the substructure for the inner cellulose thermal insulation employing standardized wood studs, optimizing material consumption in the process. A complex 3D model, presenting the proposed solution served as the basis for structural detailing as well as heat transfer simulation in order to validate the results.
