The handling and disposal of voluminous sludge produced from water treatment plants poses difficulty to environmental scientist and engineers. In fact, its environmental friendly management and disposal is challenging task and requires careful consideration. In this study, sewage sludge ashes were examined as potentially supplementary cementitious materials. The raw sewage sludge was provided by two different municipal waste water treatment plants, coming from Poland and Greece respectively. The calcination of preliminary dried sewage sludge was done at 700 °C in order to remove organic matter that would negatively affect setting and hardening of cement blends. For both raw and thermally treated materials, chemical composition was studied using XRF. The morphology of sewage sludge ash was characterized by SEM and mineralogical composition was evaluated by XRD analyses. Calcination process was monitored by STA. The pozzolanic activity was analyzed by Frattini test and measurement of strength activity index of cement pastes, where sewage sludge substituted 10 % of Portland cement by mass. The both analyzed ashes contained silica, alumina, calcium and iron oxides in significant amounts. The high amorphous content resulted in a good pozzolanic activity and high strength activity index.
