The article concerns the problems occurring in the course of modelling risk areas in the course of hazardous substances propagation. Defining risk areas is a task of the utmost importance with respect to the safety of human lives. Modelling of explosion risk areas is not easy, particularly because we consider a situation in which significant amounts of hazardous substances are released. However, in order to define such conditions, a series of factors affecting the modelling of risky situations were presented in the article. General principles of computer modelling were described, which are applied to present the scale and range of an explosion risk area. The issue of proper selection of parameters was considered regarding building a model that most closely represents real conditions that cannot be captured in reality or which would cause irreparable consequences after a hazardous substance explosion. Furthermore, the paper describes factors influencing the result analysis and interpretation as well as the possibility of their practical application in order to prevent uncontrolled explosions. The problems and limitations resulting from the modelling process were discussed on the basis of DNV ? PHAST software, version 7.11.
