Soil contamination is a component that contributes to the increase of environmental pollution, as soil is the key element that underpins food production for household consumption. The transfer of contaminants from soil to plants is one of the input mechanisms of human exposure to metals through food chain.
Mathematical models are documented as effective tools, that could help observe pollutants impact on agricultural products (vegetables and fruits) as well as on environmental systems, to evaluate different scenarios in order to represent the changes of the studied environmental system from its natural setting to mathematical background in terms of symbols and equations, to interpret available experimental results and for designing future experiments.
The aim of the present study was not to create a review of mathematical models and to give a comprehensive literature evaluation of soil ?plant interactions, but mostly to simplify the view about the models based on the correlation between the levels of soil contamination, the remanence of polluting substances in harvested fruits and vegetables, respectively. For the development of the present paper, well over hundred scientific papers and online resources, in the field of environmental chemistry, food chemistry, horticulture, agriculture, mathematics and nanotechnology, were analyzed.
