In industrial plants many types of combustible dusts are generated, processed, handled and stored. When ignited, they can burn rapidly and with a considerable explosion force, when mixed with air in proper proportions. This is the reason why adequate precautions have to be adopted, to ensure that all equipment and protective systems are appropriately protected so that the security level from these installations to be high.
The establishment and implementation of protection measures is primarily aimed at preventing the occurrence of explosions by eliminating, avoiding explosive conditions and preventing the formation of explosive atmospheres and / or ignition sources. However, if these phenomena cannot be prevented, it is necessary to design and implement protective systems adequate to the technological processes that convey combustible dusts to limit the effects of explosions. Established the adequate protection measure is made depending of the type of dust, by some parameters that define its sensitivity to ignition with different sources and the severity of the explosion it can generate, parameters known as explosive characteristics.
The paper shows the importance of knowing the explosive characteristics of dusts and identifying the factors of influence in obtaining the results. There are presented aspects regarding the behavior of some dusts in the laboratory tests and the influence of the particle size distribution and moisture content of the sample. Knowing the results and influence factors, we can correlate the protection / prevention measures and the security features according to the application.
