In Kazakhstan, more than 20 billion tons of industrial wastes from mining and processing enterprises have accumulated. These tailings are of interest as promising technogenic ore raw materials, significantly expanding the raw material base of the acting or the creation of a new processing industry. We have investigated the mineralogy and technological properties of tailings of the Balkhash enrichment factory, which are accumulated in large quantities. According to the results of studying the chemical composition of tailings, it was found that the average copper content (the main component of ores) is 0.1-0.3 %, increasing in some samples to 0.4-0.6 %. There is a high content of zinc and lead, gold, silver and rare metals. Geological testing has been carried out throughout the entire tailings storage, that is, both in area and depth. According to the data of micromineralogical studies, the sulfide composition of the ore minerals of the tailings was established: chalcopyrite, covellin, bornite and chalcocite. The grain size of these sulfides is generally 0.01-0.05 mm, sometimes reaching 0.07 mm and rarely up to 0.1 mm. According to the results of laboratory studies, the directions of studying the technology of enrichment and extraction of metals from tailings, which are based on advanced international and native scientific and practical experience, were chosen. In laboratory experiments, regrinding of the initial tailings before flotation was carried out for 30 minutes to 98 % of a particle size of -0.074 +0 mm. As a result, of studies of copper-containing technogenic raw materials by the flotation enrichment scheme, copper concentrate was obtained by the 3rd refining with copper content of 9.45 %. The studied tailings can be considered as technogenic ore raw materials for replenishing the resources of the raw material base.
