In modern times, new methods of building foundations, laying pipelines for various purposes, and building roads require detailed study of engineering-geological processes and the material composition of geological complexes. Valid maps show a weak degree of knowledge of the territory of Karelia. At the same time, this region is characterized by the complex structure of the cover of Quaternary sediments, which cover the Archean and Proterozoic complexes. The influence of neotectonic post-glacial deformations and groundwater is also great. Quaternary deposits are characterized by the predominance of glacial and lake-glacial soils of various composition over deposits of marine, lake and channel facies. Climatic conditions determine the seasonal freezing of soils to a depth of 2.4 m. This paper presents a new approach to engineering geological zoning, involving the identification of facial features and engineering geological conditions affecting the cost of surveys for various groups of objects.
