EVALUATION OF INTERFACE SHEAR STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF GRAVELS REINFORCED USING A WOVEN GEOGRID

The paper deals with determination of shear strength properties on the interface between different types of gravels and a woven geogrid. The shear strength was measured using large scale direct shear test apparatus with dimensions of the box of 300 x 300 mm and a height of 200 mm. The tests were executed on the samples compacted to the dense state. The density index of the sample was measured and controlled for each test. Three samples of gravels were tested: fine gravel poor graded, medium gravel poor graded and gravel well graded. The geogrid was a woven geogrid made of polyester with a longitudinal tensile strength of a 58 kN.m-1. The geogrid had a mesh dimension of 25 x 25 mm. All the tests were executed firstly for pure samples without geogrid. In the second step, the geogrid was fixed to the upper part of the box and the tests were performed again by the same way. The results of the tests showed that the reduction of the shear strength on the interface between the geogrid and fine gravel poor graded was negligible. Small reduction of shear strength properties was measured in the case of the medium gravel poor graded. The biggest decreasing of shear strength on the interface was measured in the case of the gravel well graded.
