Equipment designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres must meet the requirements of ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (be designed so as to avoid the ignition of the surrounding explosive atmosphere in which are intended to operate).
In order to meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, electrical equipment is usually associated to one (or more) type (s) of protection, according the EN 60079 series of standards. In case of electrical equipment that produce arcs or sparks in normal operation, the usually used type of protection is flameproof enclosure ?d?. The technical solution used for the type of protection flameproof enclosure ?d? consists in placing the parts that could ignite an explosive atmosphere inside of an enclosure that can withstand the pressure developed during an internal explosion of an explosive mixture and which prevents the explosion transmission to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure. In order to assess an electrical equipment with type of protection flameproof enclosure ?d?, this must be subjected to type tests. The most important tests, specific for the type of protection flameproof enclosure ?d?, are the tests in explosive mixtures (determination of explosion pressure, overpressure test, test for non-transmission of an internal ignition). The purpose of the paper is to underline the importance of the tests in explosive mixtures performed on equipment with type of protection flameproof enclosure ?d? and also to reveal some specific aspects that can occur during these tests. |
