Thermal analysis is the sum of investigation methods in which the physical or chemical properties of a substance or mixture of substances are measured as a function of temperature or time. In order to perform these determinations, the temperature of the product is changed after a well-established and controlled program.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FT-IR) is a non-destructive technique that involves low analytical costs and fast responses.
Thus, some physical phenomena such as melting, boiling, sublimation or chemical phenomena such as various oxidation reactions (burns), decompositions, dehydration or physical interactions (chemosorbents) can be observed. FTIR allows the analysis of gases resulting from thermal decomposition processes, oxidation, etc., which took place during the scheduled heating of the samples.
The purpose of this paper is to identify certain flammable/toxic substances that have generated unexpected events by using modern techniques that consist in the physico-chemical characterization of substances or of their compounds.
The use of this technique is safe, being a convenient method in terms of sample preparation and the quantity of sample used, the main advantage being the certainty of the results.
