In drilling industry constantly arises a need for information on pressure drops in the sections of the well bore flushing system. For that, knowledge on the drilling mud viscosity is required. Drilling muds are mostly belonging to the non-Newtonian liquids, whose viscosity is characterized by the plastic viscosity and the yield point. All existing viscometers are rather complicated and expensive aggregates, poorly meeting requirements of field conditions. In the industry, the Marsh funnel has found wide application. It characterizes viscosity by the draining time of the mud?s certain volume. However, that index cannot be used for the pressure drops calculations. Attempts at using the Marsh funnel for finding the above two viscosity parameters are characterized with introducing some additional elements and sophisticated mathematics and do not contribute to the task of bringing down the costs. The method, considered below, does not involve any amendments of the Marsh funnel structure. It requires doubling the classical Marsh funnel procedure. The draining times are to be measured twice: for obtaining the conventional time index of the funnel viscosity and for measuring the mud volume that has drained during half of that time. Basing upon those data, the plastic viscosity and the yield point are found by means of a simple calculation. The paper contains tables with comparative data on accuracy of the results, provided by the method in question with those, obtained with the FANN35 viscometer.
