The report provides comparative characteristics of filtration processes in the octahedral cell, as well as in the central and near-wall cells with cubic packaging of balls in the range of Reynolds numbers of up to 20,000. In an optically homogeneous system, where the packing of glass balls and the immersion liquid had the same refractive indices, the three components of the velocity vector of the filtration flow in the cells were measured using LDA. Characteristics of a turbulent boundary layer on the ball and vortex recirculation motion were studied, and it was shown that separation of vortices does not occur. It was established that the flow structures in the central and near-wall cells of a cubic arrangement are identical, with the exception of the zone (~ 1 mm) of the boundary layer on the channel wall. It is shown that, unlike the cubic packing (porosity of 0.476), the average velocity profile in the minimum section of the octahedral cell (porosity of 0.26) has two maxima, and the degree of flow turbulence in the jet zones is almost two times higher than in the cubic cell with the same Reynolds numbers. The results of measuring the local characteristics of the filtration flow in the specified arrangement of balls can be used to validate the physical models and numerical methods.
