The rapid developments of science and technology, as well as the restructuring of the extractive mining industry, have led to massive changes in the structure and complexity of mining equipment. Mining units must provide an advanced level of mechanization and automation, thus ensuring increased productivity and safety. The use of modern information technologies for surveillance and monitoring of high complexity technological facilities is a topical issue. By monitoring the main functional parameters of excavation, transport and warehousing using images and information technology, the extraction systems are growing. This paper presents the current state of use of the drones in different technological areas. UAVs have proven to be the great method of discovering new areas of interest and an indispensable tool in the extraction process. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) begun to have more and more artificial intelligence, being equipped with a multitude of sensors, cameras or video cameras, specialized communications devices. In the mining industry, drones can visit hard-to-reach and/or dangerous areas and can collect safety important data such as geological and topographic data, weather conditions, thermal imaging and sampling. They can also take photos from multiple angles, allowing the development of a 3D model from these photos. So were collected a series of images with the help of a drone. They were later used to map a portion of the land occupied by the vast open pit Husnicioara from Mehedinti County.
