Operations conducted by petroleum industry generate a whole range of drilling waste materials. In oil & gas industry, the most common wastes consist of used oil or water-based drilling fluids, bore dusts, and cuttings. The chemical composition of drilling waste and its toxicity depend primarily on the geological and technological conditions of drilling, the type of drilled rock deposits, type and composition of the spent drilling mud and also on solids control equipment.
Sustainable waste management became one of the biggest milestones for companies involved in oil and gas industries. Waste management, fluids and solids control are key processes for improving economics and minimizing the environmental impact of drilling. These goals can be reached by making efficient use of environmentally friendly chemicals and/or reusing and recycling the waste. Some of the solids methods of oil-contaminated drilling waste control and treatment are discussed in this paper. |
