Long-term production scheduling (LTPS) is an important and vital part of the planning process of open pit mines. It defines an extraction sequence of the mineralized material that produces maximum possible net present value (NPV) while satisfying a physical and operational constraints. LTPS of open pit mines is a large scale and intricate optimization problem that has been widely discussed in the technical literature since 1960s. Production scheduling problems are NP-hard and there is a need to improve the planning methods to get a good solution. In this paper, we suggest a hybrid model between lagrangian relaxation (LR) and bat algorithm (BA) to solve the LTPS problem under the condition of grade uncertainty. New proposed strategy presents based on optimization of the lagrangian multipliers and compare its performance with traditional method. BA is used to update the lagrangian multipliers. The results from a case study demonstrate that the LR method can effectively generate good solution for the primary problem, and the hybrid strategy can generate better conceivable solution than the traditional approximation method. In other words, the current optimal solution leads global search to guarantee that all the bats converge, while the bat algorithm and mean best position lead local search to jump out of local positions. This new method can also speed up the global convergence rate without losing the strong robustness of the basic BA. It is worth mentioning the basic approach proposed in this paper has been used to efficiently solve other classes of scheduling problems.
