The strength chart of rocks is an important characteristic in the development of minerals, the design of various geo-engineering structures. In its construction, the strength data of laboratory mechanical experiments are used, which include indirect or direct tensile, uniaxial compression, and triaxial compression according to the Karman's scheme. The necessary minimum information is the data from the first two types of test. Mohr-Coulomb circles are constructed for each specimen in the coordinate system "shear stress - normal stress". Then the envelope to circles is obtained, it's the so-called strength chart of rocks. According to the latter, the friction coefficient and the angle of internal friction are determined. In this paper, a comparative analysis of the last two characteristics is carried out depending on the linear or nonlinear representation of the envelope as a functional dependence of the shear stress on the normal stress. The calculations were based on reference data on the ultimate strength for uniaxial compression and tension of rocks. Linear dependence was constructed as a tangent, carried out to two Mohr-Coulomb circles, and non-linear - in the form of a fractional-irrational expression, which is recommended by the domestic standard.
