The paper presents the results of studies of the coal microstructure. The presence of cleavage and the normal or strike nature of the stress state of the coal seam leads to the e longitudinal fracturing (along the borehole) orthogonally to the coal bedding. With the reverse nature of the stress state, the orientation of the fracture depends on the direction of drilling the well. In this case, the crack can be formed both along and orthogonally to the bedding. The results were used to analyze the effect of hydraulic fracturing on the filtration resistance of the well system and the degassing rate of coal seams. The calculation of filtration resistances was carried out for different orientations of cracks, the distance between the wells and fractures, thickness and reservoir properties of coal seams. It was obtained that the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing is comparable with a decrease in the distance between degassing wells by 20-40%. To reduce the drilling density of degassing wells by half the density of transverse local fractures should be at least 2-3 per 10 meters of well length. This leads to a significant increase in the cost of the degassing system, and the unprofitability of the hydraulic fracturing in coal mining. The best result is the formation of cracks along the seam, especially in thin reservoirs with a small dissection. Such hydraulic fracturing can significantly reduce the density of drilling of degassing wells and increase the rate of degassing of gas-bearing coal seams.
