Autonomous passenger cars are becoming a trend today due to their role in saving human labour. However, in the field of earthmoving machinery, we can also witness a significant development in their autonomous operation. This paper deals with the possibility of using the autonomous operation of rollers and plate vibrators, intended for earth body compaction and the compaction of an upper asphalt road layer. In view of the growing share of automation and the associated computer applications for earthmoving machines, the possibility of archiving data on a building?s progress is also increasing. Thus, the potential for the subsequent optimization of the course of future construction works also increases. The autonomous control of earthmoving machinery will reduce the proportion of human error in terms of unnecessary transitions and downtime in the construction of earthwork. The diagnostics and appropriate processing of measured data allow for the improvement of the quality of work performed in terms of the optimization of the compaction process. It should be remembered that an increase in the price of a machine due to the implementation of an autonomous operation can be compensated in part by lowering the price, by eliminating the driver's cab and omitting the ergonomic elements for a machine and human interaction. With regard to the free space, it is possible to equip a machine with larger drums, or eventually with batteries for the possibility of eliminating the combustion engine, and thus reduce the exhaust gas emissions.
