Peat belongs to renewable energy sources; therefore, research into the state of reserves, use and development of peat extraction and processing technology is of great relevance, especially in areas with harsh climatic conditions. On the other hand, other sources of energy, such as coal and hydrocarbons, are exhausted and depletable. Against this background, the development of innovative technologies for peat extraction in harsh natural and climatic conditions is of great interest and prospects. One of such regions is the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia, occupying a fifth of the country, where large reserves of peat are concentrated, especially in the Arctic and adjacent areas of Yakutia.
Peat relates to the inexpensive and affordable types of raw materials for the production of various kinds of consumer goods. For the needs of the republic, peat can be used in three directions: in the energy sector as fuel for remote areas; in agriculture (organic, organic fertilizers based on peat, peat litter, etc.); in the construction industry as insulation and construction materials.
Mining and processing of peat in permafrost and wetland conditions is complicated by the fact that these deposits are mainly located on the shores and on the bottom of large lakes, where the use of traditional peat extraction technologies is impossible and disrupts the ecological balance of the lake and its coastal landscape.
In connection with the above, a scientific substantiation and development of fundamentally new technologies for peat extraction in harsh climatic conditions using the state of permafrost is necessary. The technology of peat extraction in the winter period by cutting out of an array with blocks with their drainage and preparation of peat briquettes in the summer period is proposed.
