The paper presents cartographic models for assessing the quality of soils and surface waters, scientific justification for improving existing monitoring, making operational management decisions for ecological security problems based on the use of modern means of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), methods of remote sensing of the Earth from space, including through cartographic generalizations of data. Nowadays, the integration of GIS, Remote Sensing and modeling technologies applied to the field of environmental protection is an important tool for management and decision making. The purpose of the work is to explore the possibility to integrate geographical informational systems, remote sensing and different modeling technologies in the field of assessment of environmental pollution and environmental protection.
The data translation into thematic maps employed the GIS software ArcGIS and the remote sensing software ERDAS. The module Geostatistical Analyst of ArcGIS was used for interpolation of data on the environmental pollution and calculate precision of interpolation. The methodology used is based on interpretation of remote sensed images and other data (statistical and thematic data). The input data from all the above sources were translated into the thematic maps by the methods of interpretation, classification, manipulation, integration, editing and analysis.
The thematic maps have been created for the estimation of the parameters of natural and anthropogenic objects, based on the model for the certain regions of Ukraine.
The study presented in this paper offers an example over the possibility of improving environmental management by using GIS of data collection and management. Remote sensing data is a very useful source of accurate and advanced information for environmental management and impact studies.
