Internet of Things (IoT) has a different meaning to different people. The term has been known for a long time. The use of interconnected devices has become more and more necessary to solve established business problems. It turns out that data acquired from IoT sensors and controllers are valuable enough to have the power to change the overall business models and behaviour of entire industries in a given economy. Therefore, the future of IoT as a cutting-edge technology depends on the security capabilities that IoT systems can provide to its users.
In order to be able to protect an IoT system, we need to know what it represents - what architecture is used, how it works, what kind of components and parts it has, protocols used, main application areas, and so on. Knowing its dependencies, strengths, and weaknesses can provide us a complete and accurate idea of the types of attack vectors to which an IoT systems are vulnerable.
The article presents the vulnerabilities that are typical for different types of IoT systems, the results the attackers strive for, the sequence of stages during the attack process, the potential benefits the attackers would have and the consequences that would have occurred if an attack was successful. Particular attention is paid to the capabilities of protecting a developed IoT monitoring system from such attacks and the ways in which these capabilities can be significantly improved.
