In Poland there exist legal regulations concerning the protection of agricultural and forest land. The paper aims to investigate the changes in the area of agricultural and forest land in Poland since the accession to the European Union in the year 2004. The study was based on statistical data for the years 2004-2017 provided by Statistics Poland. Paper presents: (i) changes in the land area by land type, (ii) changes in the fallow land area, (iii) changes of agricultural land area resulting from land designation for non-agricultural and non-forest purposes. The analyses were performed at the regional (voivodship) and country level. The results of the study show a steady decrease in the area of agricultural land in the country and slow increase in the forest land area in the analyzed period of time. As a conclusion main factors contributing to the changes in the land use are discussed taking into consideration main directions of designations of land for non-agricultural and non-forest purposes.
