Research was performed using application of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data for the assessment of land use and land cover (LULC) changes, especially for the monitoring forest succession on abandoned farmland. ALS point clouds were used to confirm the progress of forest succession process at the analysed area, not only in terms to show the occupied area, but also to derives informations about the structure of vegetation ? growth of trees and shrubs.
The part of Wieliczka district (Malopolskie Voivodship, South of Poland, EU) was chosen as a test site. The area of study consisted of several plots (total area of 139.77 ha) listed in the cadastral databases mainly as arable lands, meadows or pastures but most of them not used for agriculture but abandoned and covered by process of the secondary forest succession. Detailed informations about actual land cover were determined based on ALS point clouds and aerial orthophotomaps. The research confirmed a discrepancy between the cadastral data and the actual usage of the plots. Based on the processed ALS point clouds, there were defined around four times as much forested and wooded area than were recorded in the cadastral databases. The total area of forested land according to the ALS data (2012) was 25.44 ha (18.20% of the analysed area) and according to the cadastral database it was 6.37 ha (4.56%). Detailed vegetation parameters, based on ALS point clouds, were calculated to show the process of the increase in secondary forest succession. |
