Forest fires consist a continuous threat for Greece and Mediterranean countries and one of the most serious environmental hazards. Nowadays, the perspective of forest opening up as being an important preventive measure of forest protection, which is a basic pillar of a multipurpose forestry system of the Greek Mediterranean mountains, is gaining ground. The public forest complex in the region of Vria - Ritini of the Pieria Prefecture has been selected as the research area. The present investigation seeks to capture the existing network of forest roads for protection from forest fires by using modern trends of GIS for faster and more efficient utilization. The fire-risk map is based on the interaction of several spatial factors that affect wildfire?s initiation and spread, such as vegetation, topography and indicators of human presence. This fire-risk zones could be modified by the head manager in conjunction with the real fire conditions for their best suppression. The research project is expected to improve knowledge concerning the use of opening up which, until now, remains largely untapped. This evaluation and use of forest roads will take place not only within the narrow context of forestry science, but also within the wider scope of macro-economic management and protection of forest areas and human lives.
