Metro has a number of advantages, which usually have no other means of transport, but due to the many conditions only some cities can afford to have a subway. At the same time, cities that have this transport system make efforts to expand, which is often a consequence of the development of a given city. Proper analysis of the development of a given city, capturing trends and accurate forecasts regarding spatial development and extent in the long-term perspective are one of the necessary steps enabling correct actions in the scope of planning the expansion of the existing metro system. In practice, there are various approaches and methods to conduct an analysis of the existing state and assessment of communication needs with an indication of the appropriate directions for further development of a given communication system. An important role is also played here by properly designed and made analyzes on spatial data and often more advanced GIS spatial analysis.
The article is part of the current discussion on the concept of underground railway development in Warsaw. After introducing short deliberations on the previous stages of development of the underground railway in Warsaw and the concept in this respect, the analysis was carried out with the use of certain spatial data. They are the basis for determining, in the first stage, the transportation needs of the city, and then for the proposals for the development of the metro system. The article also presents selected aspects of the proposed methodology for assessing the needs for the further development of the subway, route selection, also emphasized the right choice of analysis criteria, as well as the usefulness of specific spatial data.
The proposed route of the new metro line shows, according to specific analyzes, potentially greater benefits for the development of public transport than previously applicable.
