Landslides are mass movement processes with severe consequences on the environment and human communities, and their identification and mapping is an important step in analyzing, evaluating and managing their potential risk. The results obtained in identifying areas of landslide activity may vary depending on the data sources used. The present paper is testing the landslides inventory at the scale of a commune in the Moldavian Plateau, Eastern Romania, using two different data sources: orthorectified images (2010-2013 edition) and LiDAR DEM (2012 edition), verified by field campaigns. All types of landslides, whether active, dormant or stabilized, that present distinctive morphology and clearly defined boundaries were mapped. Comparative statistical analysis of results demonstrates the superiority of using LiDAR technology: the number of landslides by with 37 bigger than the one identified using aerial photos, respectively the area affected by landslides is about 55 hectares higher than that identified with aerial images. Finally, the combined analysis aims to establish the capabilities and limitations of each of the two methods.
