An experiment of different application rates of biochar and biochar combined with nitrogen fertilizer was conducted at experimental field on a Haplic Luvisol located in Nitra region of Slovakia during the growing season of maize in 2015. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of biochar and biochar combined with nitrogen fertilization on the production of CO2 emissions from the soil. The treatments consisted of 0, 10 and 20 t ha of biochar applied in 2014 (B0, B10 and B20) and combined with 0, 160 and 240 kg N ha of nitrogen fertilizer in 2015 (N0, N160 and N240). The results in the second year after biochar application to the soil showed that the average daily CO2 emissions from biochar treatments were lower as compared to variants without biochar. Only one biochar treatment (B10N160) increased average daily CO2 emissions as compared to control (B0N160). The whole year cumulative fluxes of CO2 were in the following order B0N0>B20N0>B10N0 and B10N160>B0N160>B20N16 and B0N240>B20N240>B10N240 from not fertilized treatments, treatments fertilized with 160 kg N ha-1 and treatments fertilized with 240 kg N ha-1, respectively.
