The most important conditions to place the polytunnels are the presence of heating and water sources as well as the distance to the market, in order to diminish the transport costs. In the polytunnels, it is necessary to control the air and the soil factors. In soil, the main factor is water content that ensures the water to the plants, but over a value can has a negative effect. The negative effects of moisture excess are found in all stages of growth and development of vegetable plants because it determines adverse effect to the root systems. Under these conditions, plants develop few roots that remain in the superficial layer where it extends to the surface due to the lack of air from soil.
The main sources of moisture excess in soil are rainwater and snow-water. In winter season, after snow melting a lateral water infiltration occurs in soil at the edge of polytunnels due to storage of snow around the greenhouse.
In this paper, we present some features of the temporary manifestation of moisture excess resulted after lateral water infiltration. Our investigation is based on simulation of the wetting pattern from the marginal area inside the polytunnels. Simulations are based on the results obtained after investigations in several polytunnels from the North-East of Romania.
